Certeon's aCelera Accelerates Network Performance for VMware Hosted Virtual Desktop Computing Environments

BURLINGTON, Mass., Aug 31, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Certeon, a leading provider of virtual appliance solutions for WAN optimization and application acceleration, and a VMware Technology Alliance Partner (TAP) program member, today announced its support for "Desktops as a Managed Service" solutions based on VMware ESX 3.5 and ESXi 3.5. This announcement underscores Certeon's commitment to enabling high performance, scalable, and cost-efficient WAN infrastructures in support of hosted virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI) computing environments. VMware provides TAP program members with tools to develop products that are complementary to VMware virtualization software and help deliver high-value solutions to our joint customers.

One implementation of desktops as a managed service provides access to centralized, platform-independent desktops via Internet browsers. For the endpoints that are remote to the hosting data center, this means accessing these browser-based resources over a WAN, where high latency can impede application responsiveness and impact user satisfaction. In addition, a number of cloud-based solutions, such as Desktone(R) Desktops as a Service(R) (DaaS(R)), have come into the market to help offset the challenges behind implementing and maintaining hosted VDI infrastructures over the WAN.

A high performance, scalable, and cost-efficient network infrastructure is critical to the success of these hosted VDI environments. aCelera reduces application response time over the WAN by 95 percent and enables enterprises and managed service providers to save as much as 60 percent in total cost of ownership (TCO) as compared to proprietary hardware acceleration appliances. In addition, aCelera enables a faster return on investment (ROI) by reducing capital and operational costs and increasing user productivity.

Solutions such as Desktone's DaaS can leverage aCelera's performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency to facilitate faster desktop image, data and Web application delivery between corporate data centers and managed service providers' hosting facilities that house virtual desktops.

"We understand that the performance and scalability of the underlying network is critical to increasing the effectiveness and lowering the cost of hosted VDI infrastructures," states Jeff Fisher, Senior Director, Strategic Development at Desktone. "Certeon's fully virtualized solution, aCelera, delivers the WAN efficiency we need to extend the reach of subscription-based hosted VDI solutions such as Desktops as a Service(R) (DaaS(R))."

"aCelera effectively leverages the VMware virtual infrastructure, enabling customers to improve application delivery performance to hosted VDI environments," said Bernie Mills, Senior Director, Alliances Programs at VMware. "We are pleased that Certeon is helping to deliver added value to customers with innovative technology combined with the significant business benefits of VMware virtualization, including lower capital and operating expenses, business continuity, strengthened security and reduced energy consumption."

aCelera virtual appliance software is the perfect union of virtualization and application acceleration technology, providing businesses with a combination of performance, scalability, and easy management. aCelera is system-independent and hypervisor-agnostic. aCelera maximizes application acceleration for all traffic with performance improvements for mission critical applications and hosted virtual desktop environments. In addition, as an "open" virtual appliance, aCelera leverages the scalability of a virtual systems environment. aCelera performance scales linearly as more resources are added (i.e., CPU, memory, and disk) and supports up to 50 percent more concurrent accelerated connections than "closed" proprietary hardware appliances. aCelera's unique scalability eliminates the need for "fork-lift" upgrades of costly proprietary hardware appliances and enables IT mangers to manage costs while delivering high performance application access to more remote users.

"Virtual Desktop Infrastructures need to efficiently and cost-effectively scale to support widely distributed user populations," states Peter Dougherty, Co-founder and President, Certeon, Inc. "VMware virtualization, in conjunction with aCelera's application acceleration, scalability, and cost saving capabilities, enables enterprises and managed service providers to efficiently deliver data and applications to an exploding number of WAN-connected, browser-based hosted virtual desktops."
